FIREWALLS:
One of the things to make sure of is to have an active and running firewall on your computer. Imagine a fire that burns and hits a brick wall, it would stop wouldn't it??? That is how a firewall works, they effectively stop intrusion and problems from getting through. Most protective software comes with a firewall, however, it is possible that your computer is not running with one. Check and make sure you have a firewall running on your computer. If you don't know how to check have someone that can check check it out and make sure your firewall is up and running. Programs I know that come with a firewall are AVG and System Mechanic. SpyBot also has a firewall however, it won't work on Windows ME so right now I am kind of wondering what to do???
Note that some intranet modems come with firewalls built into them... Netgear has a double firewall protection.
